Lesson 1: Creating Tags or Visual Representations Materials: drawing paper, drawing supplies (pencils, erasers, felt markers, pens), exemplars Instruction: Show students images that use positive and negative space. Discuss what positive and negative space are. Show images of work from different graffiti artists. Ask how the artists use graffiti as a means of expressing themselves. Have students create two different images that represent them in some way, while focusing on the sue of positive and negative space. Students will start with a skeleton and then add the "meat" later once they have achieved balance. Students will then critique their tags and choose which one they prefer based on its attractiveness and it function to communicate. |
Lesson 2: Modifying Tags and Visual Representation Materials: drawing paper, drawing supplies (pencils, erasers, felt markers, pens), exemplars Instruction: Students will select the image from the previous lesson that they found the most visually appealing and represented them best. Students are then challenged to explore and modify the image. Students will be asked to create two new images that are similar to the original but are different in some way. Students will choose from a set of criteria on how to modify their image. |
Lesson 3: Creating a Graffiti Sticker Materials: Drawing supplies (pencils, erasers, felt markers, pens), blank stickers, exemplars Instruction: Students will choose one of the images they have designed to create graffiti stickers with. Students will be required to create three identical stickers in order to distribute them; one for themselves, one to trade with a peer, and the last one to put on the graffiti wall. |
